"How can you ever hope to find yourself if you never get lost?"
I have been remodeling Isla's staff, I was never fully happy with the original, it wound up feeling a bit too clinical for something that is meant to be made in the depths of a forest.
Rather than reworking what already was, I figured it would be more logical to throw out the original design entirely and start afresh. I spent an hour or so roughly sketching the revised design to be more like a carefully chosen branched twig, with the main and thicker wood being used as both a walking staff and a crutch. The branched and thinner piece is then forcibly bent and bound with tight twine and a simple ring forced into the end to hold Isla's nightlight.
The wood is a fairly simple grained texture, I did debate a far lighter wood, beech or pine maybe or the like but instead went for a deep cedar colour, as cedar trees play an important role in the narrative of the story. The rope is a simple, dirty twine and the metal is a simple corroded steel.
Overall I'm quite happy, it frees up Islas hand which feels far more natural than having the original separate walking staff and lamp both carried, when logically it makes sense to keep a hand free for exploring and venturing deeper into the forest.
I will likely model this again, a few different variations before choosing the one that I like the most.
